A Realtor Caught in the Line of Fire

If you haven't noticed, the Toronto Real Estate Market is scorching hot... and you don't feel the slightest bit sorry for me, do you?  You probably think all of us Realtors are out there making a killing and just rolling in the cha-ching-ching-bling!  Yes and no, but it's not all about the money.  We have feelings too.

They say that all decisions in real estate are made emotionally and justified logically after the fact.  I've been pondering this lately and I really don't think a lot of people even have the time to feel anything, let alone think when making buying decisions in today's housing market.   Real estate is a big investment and it's not something to dive into without some serious consideration, but there is no time to feel or think anymore... all you can do is act, or react and then kick yourself in the foot after for not acting.

It's not the best thought to have, but at times I wonder if being a Realtor would be that much easier if I just learned to shelve my own thoughts, feelings, and opinions.  I really do think it would be, but then who would I be anymore... I wouldn't even know myself.  At the same time, the ironic thing is that sometimes you become so entrenched with the emotions and situations of all your clients that you lose yourself in the process... and you come home at night and look in the mirror and don't even know what or who you're looking at anyway.

Your clients won the bidding war and they got the property that they think they liked and they only paid $26,100 over the asking price.  Great!  That's a nice commission cheque well earned for me and a property, that may or may not be worth as much as they had to pay, for them.  It kills me sometimes, but what can you do?  It goes beyond logic when you can't even justify the current market price with sales history and comparative market analysis that's less than a month old.  Hey, maybe it's just too bad that the market is what it is, so if you can't take the heat, then you can't play the game.

So you push and push and push them to put down the price that you know it's going to take to get the property, but when is enough, enough?  I mean, you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't since if they get it, they question if they overpaid and if they don't get it, they look at you for not giving them that extra shove to go higher.  At the end of the day, your toosh is always the one that's going to get the blame anyway, so at what point does it become morally compromising for a Realtor?

I'm still trying to figure that one out.
